Dublin Senior 2 Camogie League;

Skerries Harps 3-10Good Counsel  1-7

Skerries Harps Senior Camogie team opened their 2016 league campaign with a well-earned victory over Good Counsel in Skerries last week. Short a number of regulars the Harps management will have been very pleased with the teams display particularly some of the younger players starting their first senior league game.

On a dry but cool evening the conditions suited the fast young home side. Hard working mid-fielders Ciara Copeland and Nicola Thorne won their respective battles and provided a strong platform for the Skerries attack. Full forward Eve Kehoe, who was to prove a thorn in the Counsel side all game, burst through to finish a fine move to the net. This score settled the Harps players and they continued to dominate the first quarter. The forwards were causing problems and drawing frees from the Counsel defence which Nicola Thorne converted expertly. The visitors gained more possession in the second quarter and took some fine points. Their momentum was stymied when impressive debutant Grace Leach drove a long clearance which reached Kehoe who netted her second major of the half. The home side would have been happy with their 2-5 to 0-4 lead at the break.

The third quarter proved to be a very even affair with the Harps defence needing to be at their most alert to thwart the Counsel attackers. Goalkeeper Aishling Spillane, who had brought off two excellent saves in the opening half, displayed great leadership during this spell. Ably aided by Michelle O’Neill, Leach and Sive Duncan, in particular, Spillane’s defence only conceded three points in the quarter. Needing to up their game again, the Harps half forwards Tara O’Flaherty and Niamh Murphy, working very deep, gained a foothold for their side in the middle third. A third goal for Kehoe, followed by points from her sister Robyn and Murphy put the Harps in clear control going into the last few minutes. Despite conceding a last minute goal Skerries held out for a well-deserved nine point victory to get their first pair of league points of the season.
