The Moriarty sponsored U12 footballers got their all-county league campaign off to a blistering start with impressive wins over Ballymun Kickhams and O’Tooles at the weekend.

Team 1 were up first against Ballymun on Friday evening in a match played in perfect conditions in Skerries.  The away team were quick out of the blocks and Harps found themselves 2-3 to 0-3 down after 10 minutes with scores from Naoise Gilmore and Fionn Duncan and a number of fine stops by goalkeeper James Casey keeping the Harps in touch.  A few positional switches which saw Cian Ensor moved onto Ballymun’s dangerman and Aidan Coleman to centre forward settled the Harps lads and they soon began to show their true colours. 3 quick fire goals from Naoise Gilmore, Aidan Coleman and David Graham turned the game on its head and the lads never looked back.  The backs got on top with Ross Connell and Cal Duncan alert to every threat in the fullback line and Ronan Rice and Malachy Woodcock mopping up everything in the half back line.  The half time score read Harps 3-5 Kickhams 2-4.  The Harps began the second half as they ended the first, Fionn Duncan and John Fanning on top in midfield, providing an endless supply to the forwards who were now showing for every ball and threatening to score from every attack.  Further goals from Gilmore, Graham, Coleman and Brian Walsh, set up by the tireless Phelim McDonnell, saw Skerries extend their lead and although Ballymun never gave up, resolute defending and brave goalkeeping from James Casey ensured that they could not get through for the goals they needed.  The game finished with the Harps slotting over 2 more points for a final score of 7-9 to 2-8.

On Saturday morning it was the turn of Team 2 to travel to Blunden Drive to take on O’Tooles.   Skerries lined out with John Fanning in goals, full backs Greg Caffery and Conal Moore and half backs Phelim McDonnell and Mark Rogers.  Mid field was Ross Connell, Dylan Forgarty and David Hogan with Killian Renaud and Pierce Woodcock in the half forward line and a full forward line of Shane Tyrell who was starting in his first ever game for the Harps and Leo Carroll.  This time it was Skerries who started strongly from the throw in and it was not long before Phelim started the scoring with a fine point and this was quickly followed by more scoring from David and Mark. Dylan added a goal with half forward Killian Renaud adding two fine goals.   John Fanning came out of goals to add a point and half time saw a healthy lead of 3-7 to 2-1.  The Harps mentors made a number of positional switches with Pierce in goals for the first part before being replaced by Greg for the end of the match, Shane and Leo full backs and Killian and John in the half back line.   Ross, Dylan and David were midfield with Phelim and Mark in the half forwards and Greg and Conal in the full forward positions.   As expected the O’Tooles team came out with purpose and provided a great game, adding several scores in the first 10 minutes of the half.  A change of goalkeeper saw the Skerries forwards denied before Phelim got a fine goal to steady the game, and Skerries closed out the scoring with two more points for McDonnell and a point for Pierce Woodcock.  With a final score of 4-10 to 4-5 this was a great display with the lads showing their true grit when the opposition were coming back to keep on adding the scores and not only hold out but to do so in fine style.

2 great performances which sets the lads up well for the challenges ahead.
