Dublin Senior 2 Camogie League; Skerries Harps 2-12 v's Good Counsel  1-7

Skerries Harps senior Camogie team travelled to Drimnagh last Tuesday evening hoping to round off the first phase of the Senior 2 league with a victory. Having failed to come away with both points from any previous trip to the home of Good Counsel there was some apprehension amongst their ranks before the game. This could have been heightened three minutes into the game when Counsel’s Edel Reid expertly connected with a high ball and finished it to the Harps net. Memories of last season’s concession of three early goals to the same opposition must have crept into the Skerries heads but they rallied and gradually took control of the midfield area. Despite not getting their flowing game going the Skerries girls battled hard and their pressure was rewarded with two 45’s, expertly converted by Aoife Halpin.

At this stage the Harps central defenders of Yvonne Hannon and Jean Murphy had come to grips with Counsel’s two main attacking threats Reid and Kirsten Farrell. This provided the platform for the Skerries attack and they added another brace of points from the O’Flaherty sisters Tara and Rachel. The home team struck back with points from placed balls but the Skerries girls stayed in touch with some smart points from Orlaith Durkan and Rachel O’Flaherty. There was nothing between the sides at the break with the scores tied at 0-7 to 1-4.

The visitors upped the tempo further on the resumption. Evelyn Garland, moved to midfield for this game, and Orlaith Durkan were winning vital possession in the middle of the park and some clever ball into the forwards began to pay dividends. Tara O’Flaherty struck for the opening goal for the Harps. This was followed by a great point from Durkan who, despite being outnumbered by Counsel defenders, used her quick feet to create space and slotted over from an acute angle. Skerries were now dominant and this dominance was typified by a number of great takes by debutant Jane Dardis at corner back. One of her clearances found Eve Kehoe on the right wing and she raced clear of the defence to fire home the Harps second goal. With just ten minutes remaining this effectively sealed victory for the Harps. Both sides swapped points during the final minutes to leave the final score Skerries Harps 2-12 Good Counsel 1-7.

With the League taking a break now for inter-county activity Skerries will go into the second phase lying in second spot just one point behind leaders St. Oliver Plunketts.
