Durkan shoots Harps to second championship victory
Dublin Senior 2 Championship;
Skerries Harps 2-9 St Vincents 1-6
Skerries Harps senior camogie team travelled to Marino last Tuesday and came away with a hard-fought victory over St. Vincents in the Dublin Senior B championship. The memory of their defeat in the latter stages of the 2012 championship at the hands of last Tuesday’s opponents was an added spur to the players when taking the field. On a fine evening for a championship game the only difficulty for both teams was a low autumnal sun which shone directly from one goal to another. The Harps players faced into that sun in the first half and in truth struggled to reach the standard that they had set in their victory against St Oliver Plunketts in the previous group game.
Winning sufficient possession at mid-field from the hard-working Catherine Richardson the Harps forwards were not converting their chances which allowed Vincents to settle. A couple of quick points in the middle of the first quarter gave Vincents an early lead. A good point from mid-fielder Eve Keogh and a free converted by Orlaith Durkan brought the Harps level at the mid-point in the half. The second quarter saw the sides swap points with two from Durkan being matched by three from the Vincents attack to leave the home side ahead five points to four at the break. A key factor for the Harps team was the safe solid display from goalkeeper Aishling Spillane in the first period against the bright sunshine.
The second half proved to be a totally different story as the Harps players upped their game to dominate proceedings. A dominant half back line of Ciara Copeland, who excelled having come on at half-time, Jean Murphy and captain Kathy Gilmore provided plenty of ball for an attack which improved their finishing. Three third quarter points from the very accurate Orlaith Durkan pushed the Harps girls ahead. She followed up by winning a great ball in the right corner and finding Tara O’Flaherty with a pin-point pass on the 20 metre line. A deft flick by O’Flaherty released Eve Keogh to drive an unstoppable shot to the Vincents net.
Five minutes later centre-forward Rachel O’Flaherty drove a ball from the forty-five which dipped in under the cross-bar to effectively seal the game for the visitors. Vincents replied with a pointed 65 to get their only point of the half. Two late points from substitute Julia Gormley and Keogh gave the Harps a nine point lead as the game entered injury time. A late goal from the home side proved to be mere consolation as the game ended 2-9 to 1-6 in favour of Skerries.
