Skerries AFL2 league season opens with a win

posted 29 Feb 2016, 00:34 by Skerries Harps

On a crisp sunny morning in Skerries the AFL2 league season opened with a clash of two of the more fancied sides, Skerries Harps and Clontarf.

The home team who lost out narrowly in a play-off last season to reach Div.1 opened brightly and had two quick points before Clontarf settled through newly appointed captain Dawson and Colin Daly. The visitors made a couple of attacks but were denied by a resolute Harps rearguard.

The Skerries side continued to probe playing some controlled football and duly added further points from Gerry Daly and Bryan Cullen to extend their lead to four points. Eventually breeched the Harps defense to register a one pointer. But Harps had their tails up and added four more points without reply , three from Dawson and one from Donnacha Reilly who was having a fine game. The teams went in at half time with Skerries 0-08 to 0-01 in front.

The visitors clearly stunned by the Harps onslaught got a long pep talk at the interval, but it was the homesters who continued where they left off when Gerry Daly pointed from an acute angle after 30 seconds of the restart. A pointed free from Dawson and a well taken score from Reilly left ten between the sides, before the visitors had their best spell adding four points to reduce the deficit to six.

Then Harps produced the move of the match when a sweeping move ended with Gerry Daly crashing the ball to the net having been set up by Jack Smith. This settled the match and Harps winning 1-12 to 0-06. Certainly a very impressive first outing for the improving Skerries Harps side in which the defense were outstanding keeping a good Clontarf forward line to only three points from open play.

Next up in the league is an away fixture against Scoil Ui Chonnaill.
