Skerries Harps 4-8 beat St. Judes  1-4 in Dublin Senior 2 Camogie League;

Skerries Harps senior Camogie team continued their impressive start to the 2014 league by winning their fourth game on the trot with a comprehensive victory over St. Judes in Skerries on Tuesday night. A superb first half display was the decisive factor in this game. Facing a Judes team that were fielding a number of their excellent up-and-coming younger players the Harps players knew that a good start would be essential. Another superb display by their half back line led by Aoife Halpin and well supported by Jean Murphy and Evelyn Garland laid the foundation for this first half domination.

A well struck point from long range by centre forward Rachel O’Flaherty started the scoring but after a couple of attacks failed to yield scores it appeared that the Harps possession would not be reflected on the score board. But Eve Kehoe decided to take the initiative and finished a powerful run with a great finish to raise the first green flag of the day. This score settled the nerves and the Skerries forwards found the rhythm that they have shown in the league to date. Corner forward Julia Gormley who was causing the Judes defence serious problems turned her marker and blasted the ball past Judes goalkeeper Faye McCarthy. Further pressure led to a penalty award to the Harps but a great drive by goalkeeper Aishling Spillane was deflected over for a point. Points from Tara O’Flaherty and Robyn Kehoe were taken in response to two similar scores from Judes main threat Emer Maher. Full forward Niamh Murphy then scored with a trade mark volley when a clearance broke to her at the edge of the penalty area. The half finished when Robyn Kehoe scored another goal for the Harps to give them a commanding 4-5 to 0-2 interval lead.

Heavy rain began to fall during the break creating a very slippery surface and greasy ball for the second period. The visitors raised their game and on the ten minute mark scored a goal when they netted a rebound from a great save by Spillane. Any thoughts of a comeback were snuffed out by great work from midfielder Catherine Richardson who time and again won “dirty” ball in all parts of the pitch and denied Judes the chance to gain any domination. A ball won by her in the corner back position went through Halpin and Murphy before Robyn Kehoe’s shot skimmed the top of the cross bar in going over. Two other points from play by Rachel O’Flaherty and Gormley finished the scoring and left the final score at 4-8 to 1-4 in favour of the home team. A top of the table clash against St Oliver Plunketts awaits the Harps girls in their next outing.
