Senior 2 Camogie unbeaten run comes to an end!!

posted 6 May 2014, 00:49 by Skerries Harps

The unbeaten start to the 2014 Senior 2 Camogie League made by Skerries Harps came to an end in last week’s fixture on the Navan Road against St. Oliver Plunketts. A combination of a drop in the standards reached by the Harps players in their previous games and a clever tactical approach by the home side proved to be the difference on this occasion. Playing with a strong breeze in the first half Skerries failed to convert a number of clear scoring chances. To compound matters they conceded two goals in the first ten minutes when their defence was breached by Plunketss impressive full-forward Aoife Bugler. Showing great strength on the ball she out muscled the Harps defence to finish clinically from close range on both occasions. To the credit of the Skerries girls they responded well with Eve Kehoe working hard to score a brace of points.

The Harps were boosted when on the twenty minute mark a well-struck long range free by Aoife Halpin deceived the Plunketts goalkeeper and nestled in the home sides net. Despite dominating possession for the last ten minutes Skerries only managed a couple of pointed frees from Orlaith Durkan and ended the half trailing by 2-4 to 1-4.

Despite playing with the breeze in the second half the home side adopted a very defensive approach with ten players playing in their own half and isolating Bugler in their full forward line. It proved to be very effective as the Skerries players were unable to score from distance into the breeze. The massed defence were then able to smother any ball dropping into their inside back line and frustrate the Harps attackers. Using a classic counter-attacking approach Plunketts secured two vital goals through Bugler to extend their lead. Even though these proved to be their only scores with the wind at their backs it was sufficient for them to claim victory and leapfrog Skerries to top the table going into next week’s games.

The Skerries girls have their upcoming game against St Vincents to try to get back to winning ways and secure their position in the top four for the second phase of the league campaign.
