Skerries Harps senior Camogie team s travelled to Ballinteer in the Senior league game with a weakened team last week and came away with an excellent victory. At a venue where they have struggled to perform in the past few seasons the Harps girls dominated from the throw in. Receiving an excellent supply of ball from a dominant midfield of Catherine Richardson and Orlaith Durkan they struck a number of great points. Catherine Kirwan opened the scoring with a fine point from play. Durkan converted a free and then Veronica Fay-Watt, in her first full year playing senior, finished two chances expertly after being set-up by Nicola Mehigan and Tara O'Flaherty respectively. At this stage it was difficult to see Ballinteer making an impression but the Harps girls conceded a number of frees which Fiona Hayes converted to bring the margin back to a single score. Fay-Watt added another good point and then was at the end of a long delivery to score a fine goal and bring her first half total to an impressive 1-3. However, the Harps dominance was not reflected in the interval score due to a Hayes goal from a close in free with the last puck of the half which left it 1-5 to 1-3 at the break.
Facing into the breeze in the second half Skerries struggled to re-impose their dominance. Scores were exchanged in the third quarter but a brace of points by Ballinteer brought them level with ten minutes remaining. It looked like the momentum was with them but the Harps girls rose to the occasion. Centre back Jean Murphy swept up some great ball and the impressive half forward line of O'Flaherty, Niamh Murphy and Nicola Thorne who were working tirelessly gained the upper hand to land three fine points in the last the minutes. It was a deserved and welcome victory which puts the Harps back into second place behind the early pacesetters ST Judes.
