Match Report – Skerries RED Team

The team continued on from their previous week’s performance with eagerness and willingness to get on the pitch and start their game.  Shauna McGowan started the game in goal and made some excellent saves and clearances from the line.  Her job being made a little bit easier with a very strong and determined defence made up of Emily Healy, Hannah Hogan & Sarah Murphy.  These 3 defenders were put under a lot of pressure by the opposition in the 1st half.  As parts of the pitch were not in the best order and the grass being long, it didn’t lend itself to easy ground hurling.  However, the defence cleared ball after ball and supported each other very well.

With such a solid defence they were able to clear balls to a mid-field threesome of Eva Delaney, Niamh Cotter and Alice Grimes.  This was a significant and solid mid-field grouping was were competing with a similar opposition grouping, although Skerries Harps were stronger in the end.  It must also be said that whilst Skerries Harps were playing a 11 aside game Na Fianna were stronger in numbers having 14 and so were in a position to make rolling substitutions on a regular basis.  At 25 minutes aside come halftime Skerries were feeling the effects of all the hard work they were putting in.

Going into the 2nd half and trailing by 2 goals the girls had the wind at their backs and were eager to show that they had the winning of the game.  Some girls changed position at half time and these changes were significant as it put pressure on the opposition.  All the girls showed great commitment to tackling, attempting to lift the ball and strike in the second half.  In particular Eva Delaney & Niamh Cotter, in mid field, took every opportunity to lift and strike.  Alice Grimes played and excellent game in mid field and fought hard to make sure that the ball stayed with Skerries Harps.

The girls excelled in the second half and committed to each and every tackle, chasing down balls and supporting each other.  Defence was strong and with mid field moving the ball up the field it gave the forwards a chance to shine.  The forwards were made up of Naoise Finnegan, Hannah Fennell & Mia Lorenzo.  All 3 played very well .  With all girls giving 100% of effort they were rewarded with a drawn game at 5-5.  The scorers for Skerries Harps were

Mia Lorenzo (1), Hannah Fennell (2), Niamh Cotter (1), Leaha Howell (1)
