Skerries Harps 1-14 St. Oliver Plunketts 3-7 in "A" Shield final
Having beaten St. Judes and Na Fianna in the earlier rounds the Moriarty's Supervalu sponsored Harps reward was home advantage.
The loss of Dublin U16 midfielder Fionnan O'Sullivan at the throw in proved to be a rallying call for his team mates. With some positional changes enforced, Harps took a few minutes to settle into the game.
Plunketts were finding their way through the Skerries rearguard with ease, settling in with some well worked scores.
With the defence now tightened it gave the home team a platform to attack from with midfielder Thomas McBrien firing over their opening point.
With the match swinging from end to end any mistakes were being punished, any scores were quickly responded to by their opponents with no quarter being asked or given, referee Derek Doran contributed to this by using the advantage rule to it's fullest ensuring the game was played at a frenetic pace.
With full backs Donal Cotter (captain) and Shane Dowling playing from in front and not allowing their opponents any space the home team were slowly edging themselves in front, the ball winning ability of Ciaran Foran and shooting prowess of Luke Harrison was giving Harps the confidence to push on. An outstanding save from goalkeeper Cormac Rocks kept Skerries in front at the break.
Half Time Skerries Harps 0-6 St. Oliver Plunketts 0-5
The second half started at a ferocious pace with both teams looking to finish the job, a point apiece for both teams kept the game alive till disaster struck the home side, a penalty for Plunketts which they converted raised serious questions for the home team to see the game out but respond they did in typical fashion with four unanswered points.
Just as the game was going away from Plunketts they engineered and converted a second penalty and again Skerries rallied with centre back Paddy Finn a commanding presence and Conor Walsh bombing forward at every opportunity Skerries got back into the game with points from Walsh and Liam Woodcock, then opportunity presented itself and corner forward Foran won a brilliant ball in from Sam Jones and fought off his marker to finish a wonderful movement. Foran with his gander up was winning every ball played his way creating space for his fellow forwards with full forward Killian McGinnis exploiting this to it's fullest pulling the strings for attacks and scoring a well taken point after some silky skills.
With Harps now four points up and time almost up Plunketts finished a brilliant move to put the minimum between the teams.
Skerries won the kickout and after some frantic play kept their composure to see out the game.
Skerries captain Donal Cotter lifted the shield on the panels on behalf.
A fantastic achievement for the twenty six man panel and all the work they put into it and the support of their parents which is invaluable, just reward!
The management would also like to wish the players all the best with their Junior Cert this year!
