Ladies U16 Football
Skerries Harps 3-9 v Na Dubhgall 5-3.
In their final group match of the U16 Ladies football championship Skerries Harps hosted top of the table Na Dubhgall on Sunday Afternoon. In a well contested match from the start the Harps started well and scored the opening two points of the game.
Na Dubhgall responded and took the game to the Harps and during this spell they scored two goals and a point, the second goal a rather fortuitous one, as a pointed effort just dipped over the fingertips of the Harps keeper Anna Coomey. Na Dubhgall continued to press, but excellent defending, in particular by Kelly Monaghan and Michelle Brogan, restricted the away side to just one further point in the half.
Despite being up against bigger opponents the strong running midfield pairing of Ellen Tuck and Megan Parker began to win their share of possession and with half forwards Sally Dawson and Katie Leonard they were causing lots of problems for the Na Dubhgall defence and delivered some great ball in the full forward line, however some over playing of the ball rather than taken their shooting chances saw Skerries only scoring two points during this period.
With half time approaching an inspirational run by the Harps full back April D’Arcy which saw her fend off five challenges by Na Dubhgall players, carry the ball beyond the 45mt line of Na Dubhgall and with a great foot pass April found Jill Mullholland in front of goal who dispatched the ball to the back of the net. This left the half time score Harps 1-4, Na Dubhgall 2-2.
The second half started and despite the exchanges being very even in all areas of the field, it was Na Dubhgall who gained the upper hand and courtesy of goals they were scoring to Harps points they went 8 points ahead midway through the second half. The Harps girls continued to battle and much tighter defending by team captain Niamh Rocks, Rose Fitzpatrick, Chloe Hughes and Ciara McConvey and with Ailbhe Mulhall and Eimear Davis taking the scoring chance the Harps drew level with 2 minutes left when Mulhall found the back of the net after good interplay between Dawson and substitutes Ellen Ennis and Aoife Doyle.
With the game now in the balance both teams went for the winning score and when Amy Farrell, playing her first game back after been out injured for 8 months, broke up an Na Dubhgall attack and found Sally Dawson in space, it looked like the Harps would have one more chance but the ref blew for full time as Dawson broke the Na Dubhgall 45mt line to leave the final score a draw Skerries Harps 3-9 Na Dubhgall 5-3
Subject to official Ladies Board confirmation, this result should see the U16 Ladies contest the Shield final on Sunday the 3rd November.
