Skerries Harps 1-09 Clontarf 0-6.
Skerries Harps made their debut in AFL1 on Sunday morning with a home match versus fellow newcomers Clontarf.
Since gaining promotion to the top flight for the first time, this match has been on the radar over the last few months.
There has been great expectation throughout the club and Harps opened brightly, with the returning Harry Dawson popping over the first point before Clontarf levelled minutes later.
After a long period without a score it was Harps talisman Dawson who finished a move to the net to open up a lead which the homsters would never relinquish, and in doing so wrote his name in the history of the club as the first player to goal and point in the AFL 1.
Skerries then added four quick points before half time from Tommy Ryan, Paul Cashman and a brace from the lively Stephen Smith to lead 1-05 to 0-01.
From the restart Harps continued where they left off with a point from Dawson to level eight points between the teams.
Clontarf reduced the lead midway through the second half to six points but that was near as they got and two superb points from Stephen Smith insured the Skerries men came away with the points and a fantastic start to their AFL 1 campaign. This was a great start for the new selectors and backroom team who now travel to Malahide in two weeks to face St. Sylvesters.
