Report on Skerries Ladies v Moorefield Kildare Saturday Oct 17th 2015 Leinster Junior A club Championship

Skerries Harps Ladies Football team sponsored by ‘Ollies Place’ continued their impressive run in the Leinster Junior A Club Championship by winning their second game on the trot with hard earned victory over Moorefiled at The Curragh, Kildare on Saturday 17th October. On a crisp, sunny afternoon, a superb first half display was the decisive factor in this game. Facing a Moorefield team that were fielding a number of inter-county players the Harps Ladies knew that a good start would be essential and they didn’t disappoint.

The mid-field pairing of Evelyn Garland and Emily Dawson dominated their markers in the first half and supplied some great ball into their forward colleagues. The half forward line of Niamh Daly, Lyndsey Davey and Orlaith Durkan capitalized on this supply and scored a brace of unanswered points. These scores settled the nerves and the Harps Ladies forwards found the rhythm that they have shown in this campaign to date .The full back line of Captain, Rebecca Davey Aisling McIwaine and Saoirse Kavanagh saw off many well constructed attacks from the Moorefield Ladies who managed to score just a single point in the first half. Goal-Keeper Lizzie Hughes prevented the home team from raising the green flag in the first half and had great accuracy with her kick-outs.

With all six forwards combining expertly the home defense had no answer to the interplay and Orlaith Durkin rounded her marker and kicked an unstoppable shot to the Moorefield net. The goal marked a six point lead after 20 minutes. The industrious full forward line of Aine Gilmore, Sinead O Mahony and Sinead Cullen broke down ball and  prevented the defense from clearing their line with Gilmore scoring two very well taken points and score was Skerries 1-06 to Moorefield 0-01 at half time.

During half time Skerries Captain Rebecca Davey gave an inspiring speech to keep the ladies focused and that a place in the Leinster Final was at stake.

However, in the second half the Moorefield ladies upped their game by taking more control and opened the scoring with two unanswered points from free kicks. Moorefield were unrelenting in their attacks but the hard working half back line of Julia Gormley, Eve Kehoe and Anna McHugh battled hard and managed to turn over many such attacks. Skerries scored another two hard earned points against the run of play demonstrating their determination to appear in a Leinster Final. Mooefield answered with another well kicked free. Skerries now lead by 8 points. Following a poor clearance by Skerries, Moorefield capitalized by scoring a fine point from an acute angle,

With 9 minutes to go and following a sustained period of foray from the home team, the Harps defense was breeched and Dearbhil Kelly raised the green flag with a well taken goal from distance. Skerries lead now by 4 points and with Moorefield on the ascendancy it looked like the match might be drifting from Skerries, In response to the Moorefield goal and showing true leadership, Captain Rebecca Davey cleared her line, passed to the outstanding O’Mahony then linked up with the inspirational Lyndsey Davey who converted to seal a five point win over a very skillful and determined Moorefield team. A place in the Leinster Club final is the reward and the Harps Ladies and management are looking forward and hope to bring the title to Skerries.

Final score line Skerries Harps 1-09 Moorefield 1-04.
