Skerries Harps 2-12                         Na Fianna 2-1

Skerries Harps Senior Camogie team started their 2014 League campaign with a comprehensive victory over Na Fianna in Skerries last Tuesday evening. Having lost to this opposition in the corresponding game last year the Skerries girls were determined not to allow a repeat this year.

The home team started at a great pace and took control of the game around midfield providing a good supply of ball to the forward line. The Kehoe and O’Flaherty sisters were in particularly efficient scoring form. Two points each from Robyn and Eve Kehoe combined with another from Tara O’Flaherty had the Harps five points to one up after ten minutes. In a rare Na Fianna attack some sloppy defending left the visitors in for a goal which could have given them heart. However, in this instance it served just to drive on the Skerries players. The home half back line grabbed the initiative and a flowing move ended in shot being saved by the Na Fianna goalkeeper but the rebound was driven home by full-forward Niamh Murphy. Corner forward Julia Gormley then got in on the scoring act and added a fine brace of points. Robyn Kehoe finished a very impressive first half by striking a great shot to the Na Fianna net. The half-time whistle came with Skerries holding a comprehensive 2-9 to 1-1 lead.

The disappointing aspect of Skerries night was their failure to reflect their superiority in the second half on the scoreboard. In the whole second half period they only added three points (all from play) from Rachel O’Flaherty and the Kehoe sisters. With the drop in their intensity level the Na Fianna girls controlled the last ten minutes of the game. However their best efforts were thwarted by a very sound display by Aishling Spillane in the home goal and it was with virtually the last strike of the game that the visitors grabbed a consolation goal.

The Harps will have been very pleased with a victory and an excellent first half display but know that a full sixty minute effort will be required to come away from Ballinteer in their next game with a similar result.
