16 girls of the U12 team met at around 1pm on Saturday to play a league match at
home against Erins Isle.  After a short warm up, well more a loosener as the sun
was keeping everyone warm, the mentors called them together and reminded
them that last time they played this team it was a tough match.  With the
words 'full swing and they wont like it' ringing in their ears the starting
11 took to the field.  With both teams benefitting from the good condition
of the pitch the first few minutes were pretty even and then came the
opening score of the match, arguably the score of the game.  Erins Isle
keeper pucked out, Megan Carroll caught the sliothar on the full around the
half way and, once round her marker, hit a pass to Hannah Coleman.  Hannah,
who was returning from injury, hits a high ball from right wing in toward
the goal.  Emma Parker gets onto it and hits a smart shot which the keeper
did really well to save, however Danya Morgan was in hand to knock in the
rebound.   Skerries started to get on top and after a well taken point from
Hannah, Dayna Morgan scored her second goal, again instrumental in the build
up was Megan Carroll.  Danya then completed her hatrick by latching onto
Emma Parker's pass.  Hannah scored two more points and then Erins Isle got
hold of the sliothar.  The Skerries defence held out pretty well, with a
couple of fine saves from Aoife Arnold and some good clearances from full
backs Kyana McGuinness and Sadhbh Culleton.  However with the pressure being
exerted Erins Isle were bound to score and they did with a point.  As the
half time whistle goes the score is Skerries 3-3 Erins Isle 0-1.
After plenty of water and a 'great stuff, more of the same' speech from the
mentors and coaches out went the team for the second half.  However Erins
Isle had clearly had a talking to at half time and came out the stronger.
Scoring two goals early on in the half.  The crowd of supporters got behind
the Skerries team and when Hannah Coleman scored a point from a free they
were back in control.  After some determined work by the full and half
forwards including a couple of missed chances Emma Parker found an opening
and put the sliothar past the keeper and into the net.  More pressure from
Skerries and a couple more opportunities go a begging, then Claudia Herbert
who bangs in a shot from the right wing, it looks like it is going for a
point but goes over the keepers head and dips under the crossbar for a goal.
A couple of minutes later and the final whistle goes.  The match was a good
advert for camogie with plenty of skill and determination on display from
both sides.  Oh and the score Skerries 5-4 Erins Isle 2-1.  Well done girls
and a big thanks to all the mums, dads, brothers, sisters, grandparents,
friends and even dogs for their support.
