Easter Schools Hurling & Camogie Tournament

posted 22 Apr 2014, 05:25 by Skerries Harps

“The 5th year of the Sports & Photo sponsored Skerries Harps Easter Schools Hurling & Camogie Tournament took place in yet again, sunny conditions, over the 1st week of the Easter break.

3rd,4th,5th & 6th class students from all the primary schools in Skerries are invited to take part. This year we had a whopping 60% increase in numbers from previous years, with an average of 160 children taking part. A true reflection of the growing interest and participation in our community in the fastest field game in the world. And also a recognition of the great work being done by our club and our GPO (games promotion officer) Stephen Fitzgerald and club coach Johnny Beggs.

It is a mixed competition, were boys and girls representing their adopted counties, compete together over four days in a mini All Ireland series. The skill, speed and determination of their Hurling/Camogie was something to behold. The Junior competition was won by James Kenny’s Clare Team, while the Senior competition was won by Matthew Dooley’s Clare team. A mirror of last summer’s All Ireland!

The individual merit awards went to Robyn Buckley in the Junior competition, and Finn Chatten in the Senior. This award was given for leadership, skill & sportsmanship.

A big thank you to the many people who helped out all week, to our referees, and our sponsors, Claire Reilly of The Sports & Photo shop.

Roll on 2015.”
