Skerries secured promotion to AFL Division 5 on Sunday beating Lucan
Sarsfields by the narrowest of margins to complete a remarkable
achievement for adult football in the Club with all 4 teams in mens and
ladies competitions being promoted to the next level.

With a very strong breeze gusting directly towards the Dublin Road end of
the pitch quality football was always going to difficult.  Skerries
registered the first score with a fine point from Ronan O'Sullivan before
Lucan responded with 2 quick frees.  Both teams were guilty of handling
errors and turning over possession, but in the testing conditions passing
accuracy was very challenging. Skerries, with the wind advantage, started
to gain the upper hand but failed to take full advantage with a number of

The score of the game came after 20 mins with Rob McKee making a
superb run across the pitch to collect a long diagonal pass from Rob Walsh
and hoist over a fantastic point from 30 yards out on the sideline. After
trading further frees Skerries went into the break 5 points to 3 up.

Lucan immediately cut the Skerries lead with the first point of the 2nd
half but as a result of some strong and direct running from the Skerries
team Lucan's discipline cost them dearly as they conceded 4 unanswered
points in quick succession from frees to give Skerries a 5 point cushion
going into the last quarter.

Thereafter it was hard work, grit and determination from the Skerries team
as Lucan slowly but surely ate into the Skerries lead and brought it back
to a 1 point lead.  Lucan had a number of chances to bring the game to
extra time and indeed Skerries had 2 excellent goaling chances to wrap the
game up, but the Lucan keeper pulled off 2 excellent saves to keep the
game going to final whistle.  A significant feature of the second half
were the kick outs of the Skerries goalie Shane Rice. Time and time again
Shane was able to drive the ball against the very strong wind out to the
centre of the field and regularly in the hands of a Skerries player.

When the final whistle came it sparked great celebrations on the Skerries
side as they can now look forward to Division 5 football next year after
registering their 13th league match victory in a row.

It was difficult to select a man of the match after great performances
from Ciaran Smith, Kevin D'Alton, Jason Rogan and Shane Rice but in the
end the honours go to Eoin McLoughlin at wing back for a fantastic
battling performance throughout the 60 minutes.
