2013 Minor Hurling Championship "C" Final Report

posted 4 Dec 2013, 01:04 by Skerries Harps
Skerries Harps Minor Hurlers contested the Minor Hurling "C" Championship final, on last Sunday 1st Dec., against Na Fianna in Lorcan O'Toole park in Crumlin.

Skerries had done all the preparation work to leave themselves in a good position to give a performance on the big day and hopes were high going into this one.

Na Fianna were clearly keen to have a say in affairs and got off to a flyer when breaking through to score a vital early goal ; Harps now having to learn fast about the pace of Championship finals.

Harps were quickly under more pressure with Na Fianna dominating the early phases of the game, when tagging on another point to leave 4 between the sides.

The Harps remained determined and worked hard to stay in touch, but a number of shots floated narrowly wide during this period to make the task that little bit harder.

As ever, you could not fault the Harps for endeavour and they did manage to register 4 points before the interval, with Na Fianna also plundering a blistering second goal from the 20 metre line. and tagging on  4 points themselves by half-time, to leave the score  2-4  to 0-4.

Given the excellent defensive unit that Na Fianna fielded,  the challenge of closing the gap in the second half, was huge. Harps improved their chances when winning a number of tussles and forcing some frees from distance. However Na Fianna were to prove ruthless in their own score taking from distance and continued to pick off scores to add to the pressure on the scoreboard. Both benches rung the changes in the final quarter as
Harps continued to test the Na Fianna rearguard but found the Mobhi road lads in unyielding form as they performed block after block,  to thwart the Harps in their search for a vital goal and lifeline. At the final whistle the scoreboard read:  Na Fianna 2-10  Skerries Harps 0-8; with Na Fianna the clear victors on this occasion.

Great Credit goes to both teams for getting to the final and then serving up a tough ,  unyielding and skilful display on the day. Certainly from a Skerries perspective we are greatly encouraged by the progress we have made in 2013 and with the faith we have in our young players, we hope to be featuring in more of these finals in the future, where crucial experience is gained; experience that ultimately can make the difference on big days.
