AFL 2 - Skerries Harps 2-13 0-10 Scoil Ui Chonail

posted 26 Mar 2018, 02:58 by Skerries Harps

Skerries Harps entertained potential promotion rivals Scoil Ui Chonail on a lovely morning in Skerries last Sunday. With the clocks going forward, it was an early start and important for this team to follow up a comfortable 1st league win vs O'Tooles with another 2 points.

The game started with an early Stephen Smith point into the school end. However Skerries found it difficult to get possession against a very big strong physical Scoil side. However the Skerries defence led by full back Sean Rocks were not giving away scores easily.

Both teams traded points but Skerries got a decisive goal when full forward Donal Mc Ilgorm set up Kevin Gilmore for a well worked goal after 15 mins. This put Harps into a 4 point lead. Skerries started to dominate possession but a number of loose passes and turnovers allowed Scoil back into the game.  The key score arrived on the stroke of half time when a pin point Dawson pass found Mcilgorm who punched to the net to leave Skerries 2-5 0-5 up at the interval.

The 2nd half was a good controlled performance by the Harps as they kept a well drilled Scoil team at bay. Fine points by Jack Smith and sub Conan Doherty kept Scoil at arm’s length. The accuracy from Dawson from the dead ball meant Skerries were in control as the game approached its final stages. Scoil tried their hardest to raise a green flag but didn’t manage to break a mean Harps defence and a brilliant goal line clearance from Conor O Brien was the closest they came.

It was a fine team performance from this Harps team with McIlgorm helping himself to 1-3 from play. There were also good performances from Dawson wing forward Kevin Gilmore along with strong defensive displays from Sean Rocks, Kevin Dalton and Johnny Garrett on his return to senior football.

2 wins out of 2 for this Harps team who have their eyes set on an immediate return to Division 1.  Next up is a clash with reigning Dublin SFC champions St Vincent’s in the 1st group round of the championship in Mid-April.

Scorers: Donal McIlgorm 1-3. Harry Dawson 0-4, Kevin Gilmore 1-0, Stephen Smith 0-2, Oisin O Leary 0-1, Jack Smith 0-1, Conan Doherty 0-1, Shane Hickey 0-1

Team: Alun Cullinan, Johnny Garrett, Sean Rocks, Kevin Dalton, Eoin Smith, Bryan, Cullen, Jack Smith, Conor OBrien, Robert McKee, Kevin Gilmore, Harry, Dawson, Gerry Daly, Oisin O Leary, Donal McIlgorm, Stephen Smith, Subs used. Kevin Coyne, Fionnan OSullivan, Conan Doherty, Shane Hickey

Match Report - AHL5 v Good Counsel

posted 11 Mar 2018, 16:57 by Skerries Harps

Good Counsel 1-7 Skerries Harps 1-

For the second league game of the season Skerries Harps scored a late goal to grab a hard earned point. Played on a Galtymore Road pitch that had lying water in parts both teams struggled to display their skills. In fact there were 11 minutes on the clock before either team bothered the scoreboard. The Harps had dominated possession from the off but hit five wides in the first ten minutes, including two from scorable frees from the normally reliable Andrew Smith.

Counsel then converted their first free to open the scoring. Skerries hit back with two good scores from play converted by wing back Ian Furlong and wing forward Stephen Rogan. Another spell of hard fought but scoreless play ensued. The home team then added three good scores from play. Furlong, who was excelling at wing-back replied for Skerries. A long range effort from Jonny Fay-Watt left the half time score 0-5 to 0-4 at the interval.

The third quarter belonged to the home side as the Harps were failing to win ball around the middle third. Good Counsel added two points and on the three quarter mark rattled the Harps net to get what looked like it might be the decisive score.

To their credit the Harps re-grouped. The switch of Smith and Fay-Watt in the number 6 and 11 slots led to this period of dominance. Furlong continued to drive forward and earning two frees which Fay-Watt converted. Full forward Jack Fitpatrick was becoming increasingly effective. Breaking through he was thwarted by a superb save from the home goalkeeper. From the next attack he was set up by a tremendous Furlong pass but his sizzling effort for goal went over the bar.

With three minutes remaining a long Smith delivery was pulled on by Rory Noonan, saved by the Counsel goalkeeper but finished to the net expertly by the alert Fitzpatrick. In a hectic last few minutes both sides efforts for a winner were beaten back by strong defence. The Harps defensive display was led by corner backs Daniel Graham and Ciaran Allidinewho backed up the performance of Furlong in minimising the home sides scoring.

A league point gathered was a good return in the circumstances but The Harps will hope that the return of theirmissing quartet of forwards will push them to victory in their next game.

Harps: Oisin O’Leary, Daniel GrahamKian Coleman, Ciaran Allidine, Ian Furlong (0-2) Jonathan Fay-Watt (0-3) , Robbie O’Connor, Rob Ferguson, Rory Noonan, Cian Coleman, Andrew Smith, Stephen Rogan(0-1) Cathal Azzarpardi, Jack Fitzpatrick(1-1), Eoin Hickey.
