Skerries Harps Senior 2 Camogie go top of the league after a great win over Raheny

posted 29 May 2018, 23:56 by Skerries Harps   [ updated 30 May 2018, 01:29 ]

Skerries Harps 2-18 Raheny 1-8.

Skerries Harps Senior 2 Camogie team sit proudly on top of their league table going into the inter-county break after a thirteen point victory over Raheny on Tuesday. On a glorious summer evening the Harps girls, playing well in bursts over the hour, were never really in serious danger of losing their unbeaten status.

A strong start led to early points from Nicola Thorne (f), Emma Parker and Emer Atkinson to give the Harps a lead they never relinquished. A quick break led to a good point for Raheny from their Inter-county player Aoife Dooley. However a storming performance from  Skerries mid-fielder Emma Parker was giving her side a stronghold around the middle. Tara O’Flaherty benefited and added two excellent scores from the left wing.

Another strong run from Dooley opened the Harps defence and Lisa O’Neill finished expertly to the Harps net. However, the Skerries response was emphatic. Atkinson fired over from a Parker pass and then collected a super Orlaith Durkan pass to finish to the Raheny net. Thorne added a free and with twenty five minutes gone the game was effectively over as a contest when another goal followed. Wing-Back Megan Carroll, putting in another strong performance, earned a free on the 65m line. Centre back Jean Murphy struck a long ball in which deceived the Raheny defence and nestled in the net.

Thorne and Durkan ended the half with two very well taken points. At 2-9 to 1-3 the Harps were in a comfortable position at the break. Maybe this affected their third quarter performance as the first four points of the second half came from the home side. Skerries lethargy contributed to this and they were also conceding some soft frees

To their credit the Harps responded. Some driving play from mid-fielder Aoife Halpin and centre forward Niamh Murphy put them in the ascendancy again. Skerries dominated the final quarter and scored some fine points. Halpin, Thorne (2), Niamh Murphy and Durkan scored the last five points of the game. This gave the sea-siders a deserved thirteen point margin at the finish.

Skerries will be looking forward to a decisive league game against their Fingal rivals Naomh Mearnog after the break and then test themselves further when they compete in the Senior 1 championship in August.

Skerries Harps: Ashling Spillane, Grace Leach, Ona Keegan, Kathy Gilmore, Roisin Leneghan, Jean Murphy(1-0), Megan Carroll , Emma Parker(0-2), Aoife Halpin (0-1), Nicola Thorne (0-7,5f), Niamh Murphy(0-1), Tara O’Flaherty (0-3), Orlaith Durkan (0-2), Emer Atkinson(1-2), Hannah Coleman Subs: Ciara Copeland for Niamh Murphy (temp HIA)

Skerries Harps Senior 2 Camogie team continue their winning ways!

posted 28 May 2018, 01:29 by Skerries Harps   [ updated 28 May 2018, 01:31 ]

Skerries Harps 5-11 Erins Isle 2-7.

Skerries Harps Senior 2 Camogie team continued their winning 2018 league campaign in impressive style with a thirteen point victory over Erins Isle in Finglas last Tuesday. An impressive statistic from this game was that Skerries scored their total tally of 5-11 from play. Utilising their mix of youth and experience the Harps were never really in trouble throughout the hour.

A blistering start resulted in early points from Nicola Thorne (2), Orlaith Durkan (2) and Megan Carroll and had the visitor’s ahead five points to one at the end of the first quarter. Isles did score the next two points but the Harps girls responded with a second score from Carroll. The first goal of the game came when veteran Skerries full forward Emer Atkinson manufactured, and finished, the opportunity.

Thorne and Durkan were causing havoc on the right wing. As a long ball from Durkan was dropping in Atkinson caused panic in the Isles full back line and the ball ended up in the Isles net. A dominant half back line of Roisin Leneghan, Jean Murphy and Grace Leach were providing a plentiful supply of ball and Durkan, midfielder Aoife Halpin and Atkinson added points leaving it 2-9 to 0-3 at the break.

The Harps were never as fluid in the second half but, at crucial stages, their young forwards Hannah Coleman and Megan Carroll struck good goals. The Isles picked off a couple of scores and added a goal from a free when the Harps backs switched off momentarily. Coleman (0-1) and Durkan (1-1) completed the scoring for Skerries who ended up with a winning margin of thirteen points.

Skerries remain the only team with a 100% record in this division at this stage.

Harps: Ashling Spillane, Claudia Herbert, Ona Keegan, Kathy Gilmore, Roisin Leneghan, Jean Murphy, Grace Leach, Ciara Copeland, Aoife Halpin (0-1), Nicola Thorne (0-2), Niamh Murphy, Megan Carroll (1-2), Orlaith Durkan (2-4), Emer Atkinson(1-1), Hannah Coleman(1-1) Subs: Leona Harford for Copeland (inj)

Senior Footballers beat Raheny to go top of the league.

posted 24 May 2018, 08:48 by Skerries Harps

Skerries Harps put their unbeaten start on the line at home to Raheny on a
warm Wednesday evening. Both teams were understrength with dubs stars Brian
Fenton & Brian Howard  missing for the visitors and Bryan Cullen was a
notable absentee for the hosts.

With a number of injuries to key players in the last game Skerries started
with a young team and the return of Stephen Smith from illness was a timely
boost.

The game started and the hosts went into an early point lead with fine
points from Gerry Daly and full forward Donal McIlgorm. From the next
attack the ball was worked across to young Killian Mc Ginnis and he found
the net with a fine finish. It was a fine start by the hosts but should
have been better when a misplaced final pass to McIlgorm prevented a
certain 2nd green flag.

After 12 minutes Raheny started to get a foothold in the game with strong
tackling and patient build up in attack. They managed to get on the
scoreboard with 2 fine points. From a turnover in midfield Raheny broke
with pace and some quick handpassing meant their corner forward had an easy
task of palming to ball to the net and the back post. Some poor shooting
and poor passing was getting the Skerries crowd frustrated. Kevin Gilmore
restored the one point lead but some poor discipline by Skerries on the
stroke of half time meant the game was level 1-4 apiece at the intervel
with Harps shooting 10 wides during the 1st period

The 2nd half started with Raheny getting the next 3 points and dominating
in.most areas..however Skerries were not giving much shooting opportunites
away in defence. It looked to be going against Skerries when Stephen Smith
missed a great goal opportunity from close range and Mc Ilgorm had a goal
harshly ruled out for a technical foul. The introduction of the returning
Rob Mc Key brought some pace to the Harps side. With Mc Ginnis and a Dawson
free leaving the minimun between the sides,  Skerries were righy back in
the contest approaching the final quarter. The next score was a decisive
one when a fisted Mc key effort seemed to have crossed the line and Gilmore
rushed in to finish it off at back post. It was a vital score at a vital
time and Raheny were then reduced to 14 men for a wild tackle on Fionn O
Leary. With the game approaching the final 5 minutes a pin point Dawson
cross field pass left Daly bearing down on goal and he made no mistake with
a fine finish. With the extra man Skerries played some fine keep ball and a
pin point Jack Smith pass saw the over lapping full back Ross Mc Garry
tapping over a fine team score to complete a tough hard working victory.

There were some fine performances throughout and could prove a vital
victory come the seasons end. 5 wins out of 5 Harps see themselves on
top.of the table. Next up is a tough assignment away to Round Towers
Clondalkin after the bank holiday weekend.

Scorers:
Killian McGinnis 1-2
Gerry Daly 1-1
Rob McKey 1-0
Donal Mc Ilgorm 0-2
Kevin Gilmore 0-1
Harry Dawson 0-1 free
Ross Mc Garry 0-1

Team:
Alun Cullinan, Fionn O Leary, Ross Mc Garry(capt) Kevin Dalton, Eoin Smith,
Sean Rocks, Jack Smith, Conan Doherty, Eoghan Mc Ginley, Kevin Gilmore,
Harry Dawson, Gerry Daly, Killian Mc Ginnis, Donal McIlgorm, Stephen Smith
