Harps Hurlers unlucky in the Junior Hurling Championship Semi-Final

posted 8 Oct 2018, 00:46 by Skerries Harps

Realt Dearg 0-18 Skerries Harps 0-15

A strong last ten minutes from Realt Dearg put Skerries Harps Junior hurlers out of the championship at the penultimate step last Sunday in Drimnagh. In what was these team’s third final or semi-final clash in the last four years Realt Dearg finally got one over their North County rivals.

A strong wind blew down the Drimnagh Castle pitch and Skerries played into it in the first half. It turned out to be a very even and intense half. The sides exchanged points in the first quarter. A feature of the Skerries play was the clever use of the ball into the wind with full forward Denis Forde benefiting. Forde was unstoppable and converted six superb points from play in that half.

Having fallen three behind on 15 minutes a couple of Forde points together with a Ciaran Smith free brought the sides level. Great defence from Eoin Hickey, Ian Furlong and Andrew Smith were keeping the home side at bay. Behind them goalkeeper Jason Rogan dealt capably with anything that beat his defenders. However the loss of centre back Andrew Smith to injury after 20 minutes certainly disrupted the Harps. As a portend of things to come in the second half Realt Dearg finished strongly with three unanswered points. It could have been worse for the Harps if Rogan hadn’t brought off a wonder save from the home corner forward Robbie Madden at the expense of a 65.

The Harps failed to take full advantage of the breeze on the resumption and the home side maintained the three point margin for the first ten minutes of the half. Then, driven on by Furlong and Eoghan McGinley who had moved back to the centre back position, they gradually reeled in the home side. Aided by some excellent free taking by Aidan Kehoe they drew level and took the lead with a fine score from mid fielder Kevin Gilmore. Another long range Gilmore point put the Harps three ahead with ten minutes remaining. Ominously two goal chances created by great runs by Gilmore and Forde were not converted.

Realt Dearg began to dominate around the middle and the unerring accuracy of their marksman Conor Maharaj pulled the deficit back and they hit six unanswered points to take a three point lead.

In one last attack Shane Rice had the ball in the Dearg net but the referee disallowed it for a square infringement. The Harps gallant championship run had come to an end.

They must now re-group to face Cuala in a promotion play off and gain some tangible reward for their effort throughout the year.

Harps: Jason Rogan, Kian Coleman, , Dan Graham, Ian Furlong, Andy Smith, Jonny Fay-Watt, Kevin Gilmore(0-2),Eoghan McGinley, Aidan Kehoe, (1-0),Ciaran Smith (0-10, 8f), Rory Noonan, Barry Grimes,  Denis Forde(0-6), Shane Rice  Substitutes; Gerry Daly  for A Smith, Paddy Fay-Watt for Grimes, Robbie O’Connor, David Kelly, Sean Rocks.

Harps report great Hurling win over Whitehall Colmcille's

posted 26 Sep 2018, 00:35 by Skerries Harps   [ updated 26 Sep 2018, 15:19 ]

Final Result: Skerries Harps 2-14 Whitehall Colmcille 2-10

Scorers: Skerries Ciaran Smith 0-10, Denis Forde 1-2, Kevin Gilmore 1-0, Andy Smith and Aidan Kehoe 0-1 each.

The Harps started against the strong breeze but opened the scoring with a pointed Ciaran Smith free. The scoring rate was slow with just two further points exchanged in the first ten minutes. Then Whitehall went for goal from twenty metre free which was saved but they scored from the rebound to go two ahead. Skerries rallied and the hard-working Denis Forde scored a goal to put the Harps one ahead. However with five minutes remaining in the half Whitehall added a second goal following a strong run through the middle. The visitors led 2-6 to 1-6 at the break.

Despite playing against the breeze Whitehall started the second period strongly and pointed quickly. Crucially the Harps never let the margin stretch past four. The sides shared six points over the next ten minutes. Midway through the half, led by Andy Smith, Iain Furlong and Eoghan McGinley, the Harps began to dominate possession. Eventually that told when the energetic Kevin Gilmore finished good work by Ciaran  Smith with a crisp finish. This put the Harps a point ahead and they finished strongly to qualify for the semi final on a 2-14 to 2-10 scoreline.

Goalkeeper Jason Rogan impressed throughout, ably assisted by Andy Smith, Dan Graham and Ian Furlong in defence. McGinley and Gilmore were generally on top at midfield, Forde and Barry Grimes worked hard in attack and earned many of the frees that Ciaran Smith converted. Without being at their best the Harps will be happy to have qualifies for a first Junior B championship semi-final.

Promotion push still on for our AHL5 team

posted 3 Sep 2018, 00:40 by Skerries Harps

Skerries Harps 1-16 St. Oliver Plunketts Eoghan Ruadh 0-17

A clinical finish from the tenacious Eoin Hickey mid-way through the opening half turned out to be the crucial score in this narrow win for Skerries Harps junior hurlers as they maintained their promotion push in AHL5 on Thursday night. In what was effectively a play-off semi-final against their visitors from the Navan Road the big home crowd were treated to a nerve-tingling final quarter.

Whilst the quality of the game dipped at times as a contest it had everything an observer would wish for – some great scores by both sides, critical defensive efforts, a 7-minute stoppage due to a temporary floodlight failure, a strong comeback by Plunketts and two cool finishes from the Harps in injury time to secure an exciting victory.

On a fine evening for hurling the Harps opened brightly and opened the scoring with a couple of points from top-scorer Ciaran Smith. Some impressive play from Cian Coleman and Smith created an opening for Aidan Kehoe who burst through the defence and was desperately unlucky to see his super effort rebound off the crossbar. However, Hickey’s goal following great work by Shane Rice gave the Harps a five point lead.

The break in play due to the floodlight failure broke the Harps momentum and Plunketts finished the half in the supremacy, narrowing the gap to two points at the break 1-6 to 0-7.

Denis Forde, after a quiet opening period, burst into the game after the interval. A brave strong run through the centre of the visitor’s defence was finished sweetly to inspire an impressive third quarter from the Harps. Two more points from Forde, a super score from the energetic Kevin Gilmore and a number of converted frees from Smith put them six up at the three quarter stage.

To Plunkett’s credit they raised their game and point by point whittled down the margin and with two minutes of normal time remaining the sides were level at 1—13 to 0-16. It was then that Skerries showed their mental strength. The tireless Eoghan McGinley delivered a ball into the corner which Shane Rice won and struck a great point from a difficult angle. Plunketts answered with a long range point. Then Smith bravely won a puck out from Oisin O’Leary to feed Barry Grimes who converted despite significant pressure from the opposition defenders. Forde won a free and Smith’s cool conversion from far out ensured that the Harps leap-frogged Plunketts into third place and qualification for the promotion play-off.

It was just reward for some great performances over the last month. Having also reached the knockout stages of the Junior B championship it gives Harps hurlers plenty to aim for this Autumn.

Harps: Oisin O’Leary, Ciaran Allidine, Jonny Fay-Watt , Dan Graham, Rob Ferguson, Andy Smith, Kevin Gilmore(0-1),Eoghan McGinley, Aidan Kehoe, Eoin Hickey (1-0),Ciaran Smith (0-10, 8f), Cian Coleman, Denis Forde(0-3), Barry Grimes (0-1), Shane Rice (0-1) Substitutes; Ian Furlong  for Hickey, Kian Coleman for Allidine.
