Skerries Harps Junior Hurlers bounced back with fantastic Win over Cuala

posted 30 Jul 2018, 00:42 by Skerries Harps   [ updated 30 Jul 2018, 00:43 ]

Skerries Harps 1-15 Cuala 1-11

Skerries Harps junior hurlers bounced back from their disappointing loss to Crumlin last week with a surprising, but well deserved, victory over previously unbeaten Cuala in Skerries last Tuesday.

The home side started with a determination lacking from their Crumlin display and opened the scoring with a converted free from Ciaran Smith who would end the game with eight pointed frees in total. However in the fourth minute they were rocked when a deflection from a long free wrong footed Oisin O’Leary in the Skerries goal to give the south-siders an early lead. The response from the home side was commendable and they totally dominated the rest of the half.

Playing from the road end the half back line of Ian Furlong, Eoghan McGinley and Rob Ferguson took over and supplied some great ball into the forward line. Points from McGinley, Aidan Kehoe. Shane Rice and Jason Rogan complimented some excellent frees from Smith to give the Harps a 0-9 to 1-3 lead at the interval. A criticism of the Harps would be that they had failed to turn their dominance into a bigger lead.

Cuala started the second half brightly and picked off a couple of early points. Skerries reacted with some great hassling and harrying all over the pitch. This was epitomised by young Donal Cotter, making only his second start at adult level, who although nominally playing at wing forward was winning ball all over the field. He was ably supported by Ciaran Allidine who had replaced the injured Stephen Rogan early in the first half and, although playing put of position at midfield, won some great turnovers to stem the Cuala tide.

The critical score came midway through the half when the impressive Dan Graham at cornerback smartly intercepted a Cuala break and launched a Skerries attack. When the ball broke on the 13 metre line Aidan Kehoe was on hand to dispatch to the Cuala net. This stretched the lead to four and with a superb save from Oisin O’Leary following soon after there was no way the Harps were going to be denied their victory. Although Skerries lost Rogan, O’Connor (both first half) and Furlong (40 mins) to injuries there were telling contributions from Allidine, Eoin Hickey and David Kelly .

This victory puts Skerries well back into the frame for a promotion play off with two games remaining in the league.

Harps: Oisin O’Leary, Robbie O’Connor, Paddy Fay-Watt , Dan Graham, Rob Ferguson (0-1), Eoghan McGinley (0-1),  Ian Furlong , Stephen Rogan, Jason Rogan (0-2), Denis Forde, Aidan Kehoe (1-2), Ciaran Smith (0-8),Barry Grimes, Donal Cotter, Shane Rice (0-1) Substitutes; Ciaran Allidine for Stephen Rogan (inj), Eoin Hickey for O’Connor (inj) and David Kelly for Furlong (inj)

Harps Junior Hurlers great fightback just falls short!

Crumlin 2-19 Skerries Harps 2-17

Skerries Harps junior hurlers returned from Pearse Park on Friday evening a very disappointed bunch. Having won their previous four games Skerries travelled with the intention of continuing that run and enhancing their promotion play-off hopes. However a disastrous opening three minutes were to prove fatal for Skerries. A dreadful defensive lapse resulted in a goal for Crumlin when Darren Whelans mishit shot ended up in the back of the unguarded net. Whilst Skerries responded with an Aidan Kehoe point another goal for Crumlin followed in the third minute when wing forward Eoin Corbett got in behind the Skerries defence  and netted.

Those early goals rattled the Skerries players and although Eoghan McGinley (3) and Barry Grimes (2) pointed well the home side were very efficient in adding to their scoreline. Crumlin finished the half well and left nine points in it at half time on a score-line of 2-12 to 0-9. Skerries tally of six wides in that half did not help their cause.

In a very competitive third quarter both teams added some crucial scores with a goal from Skerries Shane Rice and three points from Ciaran Smith keeping the pressure on the home side. However, Crumlin added points at the same rate and at the three quarter stage there was still an eight point margin between the sides.

A totally dominant last quarter during which the Harps outscored the home side by 1-4 to 0-1 provided a very exciting finish to the game. Aidan Kehoe’s goal started this spell and points by Grimes (2), Kehoe and Denis Forde left the Harps within a score of victory. Fighting to the end they will rue the goal chances spurned in those final minutes when Shane Rice and Stephen and Jason Rogan all had opportunities.

A game against league leaders Cuala in mid-week provides an opportunity to produce a better performance and get back on the winning trail.

Harps: Oisin O’Leary, Robbie O’Connor, Paddy Fay-Watt , Rob Ferguson, Ian Furlong ,Andrew Smith , Jason Rogan, Jonathan Fay-Watt, Eoghan McGinley (0-5), Denis Forde (0-1) , Aidan Kehoe (1-2), Ciaran Smith (0-4, 1f),Barry Grimes(0-4), Donal Cotter, Shane Rice (1-1) Substitutes Stephen Rogan for Cotter.

St. Oliver Plunketts 1-15 Skerries Harps 4-13

posted 25 Jun 2018, 00:45 by Skerries Harps

Skerries Harps junior hurlers notched up their third successive championship victory when they travelled to Martin Savage Park on Sunday morning and came away with the points following an impressive display. Glorious summer weather and a firm pitch contributed to a fast flowing and open game. Both teams battled with great intensity in the first half and there was only ever a puck of a ball between the teams with the home side ahead 1-9 to 1-8 at the break. The Harps goal in that half, scored by Jonny Fay-Watt, showed them at their best. He finished the ball to the net after a move that involved at least half a dozen players, quick movement and accurate passing.

Skerries needed that goal as Plunketts forwards were very efficiently taking their chances. At half time Skerries moved mid-fielder Eoghan McGinley to full forward and it proved to be the decisive move of the game. The Harps third quarter display provided the basis for their eventual win. McGinley dominated his man and scored an early second half goal to put his team ahead. Points from Aidan Kehoe and Ciaran Smith added to their total. Although Plunketts increased their half time tally with three points Smith scored another goal to put four points between the teams.

A hectic ten minutes followed with both sides defences working furiously to limit their opponents and resulting in the exchange of just two points each. With ten minutes left another great delivery from the impressive Denis Forde was taken by McGinley who again took on his player and finished smartly to the net. As the home side went for goals in an attempt to get back into the game the Harps goalkeeper Oisin O’Leary proved his worth with a number of good saves and composed clearances.

Further points in the last five minutes from Smith (2) and substitute Eoin Hickey pushed the Harps lead out to seven points which was the final margin.

Following on from a good league victory against Whitehall in the previous game the Harps returned to the seaside in good form and looking forward to building on this to enhance their league position and ensure that they are in the shake up for promotion at year end.

Harps: Oisin O’Leary, Daniel Graham, Paddy Fay-Watt , Ciaran Allidine, Ian Furlong ,Andrew Smith , Rob Ferguson, Jonathan Fay-Watt(1-0), Eoghan McGinley (2-1), Denis Forde (0-2) , AidanKehoe (0-1), Jason Rogan (0-1),Barry Grimes(0-2), Ciaran Smith (1-3(1f)), Cian Coleman (0-2),; Substitutes Eoin Hickey(0-1) for Grimes and David Kelly for Coleman.
