Match Report - Minor Football Shield Final

posted 20 Nov 2017, 06:21 by Skerries Harps   [ updated 20 Nov 2017, 07:19 ]

Skerries Harps finished their season in style with an impressive 4-9 to 0-10 point win against Parnells in Chanel College. Goals win games was never more to the fore as a brace either side of halftime made all the difference. The opening 10 minutes was a tight affair, with a great point from Dylan Finnegan, leaving Parnells 3-1 ahead. Harps rebounded with centre forward Cillian McGinnis linking well with Ciaran Murphy inside. A pinpoint pass in followed by a fine left footed finish from Murphy put Skerries out in front. From there the away side started to dominate with the probing runs of Robbie Clinton causing problems. This pressure paid dividend for the harps when Clintons fortuitous long ball deceived everyone including Parnells shot stopper Aaron Gaffney and ended in the back of the net. Both sides tagged on points before half time with Skerries entering the half time break 2-3 to 0-4 to the good.

Harps maintained their pressure early in the second half, and 2 goals in quick succession showed little way back for the home side. The first came again from good work from Clinton on the end line as he stepped inside 2 defender, and played the ball accords the square where it was fired home by Murphy.
Soon after a long ball from midfielder Tom Carroll was met high by Dublin minor Liam Woodcock who palmed to the net.

Parnells tried their best to get back in the game but resolute defending by Shane Dowling , Adam Bund and team captain Fionn O'Leary kept them at bay. At 4-3 to 0- 4 skerries were able to push on with good points from Conor Walsh, and Clinton. As Skerries emptied their bench, both team traded points and a fine save from Cormac Rocks kept the home team goalless.

This shield is another win in what has been a successful few years for this promising Skerries side marking their fourth year finishing up with silverware. Onwards an upwards to next year as this young side look to progress to Minor A championship in 2018

Scorers; C Murphy 2-5, R Clinton 1-3, L Woodcock 1-0, C Walsh 0-1,

Match Report - Minor Football Shield semi final

posted 14 Nov 2017, 09:46 by Skerries Harps

Going into the Minor B Football Championship Shield semi final, without Dublin Minors Fionnan O'Sullivan and Sam Jones, Skerries Harps were hoping the home crowd gathered for this Friday evening encounter could spur them on. The last time the sides met it was a tight affair with a strong finish from the Skerries side leaving them as 3 point winners. Skerries played into the school end in the first half and despite the wet conditions powered to a 4 points to 1 lead through points from Liam Woodcock (0-2) Ciaran Murphy and Robbie Clinton.

Isles started to gain a foothold in the game with Dublin Minor Neil Matthews starting to drive forward kicking 3 of 5 points to put the away side back in the driving seat. With Killian McGinnis moving into midfield and subduing the impact of Matthews, Skerries regained some dominance with team captain Fionn O'Leary driving forward from centre back and gaining a free which Murphy slotted  over. This dominance continued and was capped off by a great score from Conor Walsh who started and ended the move with a fine end to end point. A tit for tat finish to the half saw the team withdraw at half time with Isles 0-8 points leaving them one to the good.

Harps stared the stronger in the second half and an early goal from Woodcock put some daylight between the sides. On a wet night the level of fielding was impressive with Donal Cotter and Murphy both dominating in the air putting pressure on the Isles kick outs, and with McGinnis picking out killer passes Harps were surging ahead. Despite this a breakaway goal put Isles back in the game and left for a pulsating finish. Heading into injury time with 4 between the sides the Finglas men couldn't find the Harps goal again and a quick exit saw Luke Harrison close off the game for Skerries with a goal at the other end.

A big weekend for the Skerries club next weekend with an U21 B championship quarter final on Saturday followed by the Minor B shield final on Sunday.

Final score Skerries Harps 2-18 to Erin's Isle 2-11,

Skerries team - Cormac Rocks, Shane Dowling, Sean 'Oge' Fearon, Ruairi Gielty, Conor Walsh, Fionn O'Leary (c), Adam Bund, Tom Carroll, Donal Cotter, Robbie Clinton, Liam Woodcock, Killian McGinnis, Oisin McKey, Ciaran Murphy, Ronan Horan. Subs: Luke Harrison, Ben Keogh, Josh McGough, Darragh Redmond

Scorers:Ciaran Murphy 0-8 (0-5 frees), Liam Woodcock 1-3, Luke Harrison 1-0, Robbie Clinton 0-2, Conor Walsh 0-1, Ruairi Gielty 0-1, Killian McGinnis 0-1, Ben Keogh 0-1.

Skerries Senior 2 Camogie team win Championship

posted 16 Oct 2017, 08:14 by Skerries Harps   [ updated 16 Oct 2017, 08:16 ]

Skerries Harps 4-6 St. Oliver Plunketts/Eoghan Ruadh 2-5

Skerries Senior 2 camogie team prevailed in a tense exciting Championship final against St. Oliver Plunketts/Eoghan Ruadh to win a trophy last won in 2009. Plunketts had won the league earlier in year when they defeated the Harps on the Navan Road. It was no surprise, therefore, that this final was a very close affair for most of the sixty minutes.

A defining burst of 2 goals and a point in the last ten minutes of the game was the difference between these two close rivals. In truth the winning seven point margin was harsh on the losers who had drawn level on the 42nd minute with a cleverly taken quick free. It looked like they might push on to victory at this stage. The Harps had to dig deep in the middle period of the second half. As a result an eight minute period of dominance by Plunketts did not yield another score. Goalkeeper Ashling Spillane dealt with anything that landed in her area and got tremendous cover from her full back line of Ciara Copeland, Rosin Leneghan and Kathy Gilmore.

In a continuation of her excellent form centre back Jean Murphy dominated. Her half back colleagues Grace Leach and Megan Carroll belied their youth to display great composure in the face of the Plunketts attacks and reasserted the Harps dominance to give their attackers opportunity to clinch victory with those late scores.

The game had started with Plunketts, wind assisted, gaining a foothold through the influential Aisling Carolan at midfield and converted an early free. As Skerries were struggling to get the ball past midfield Plunketts attacked but failed with two further efforts. The Harps half forwards Nicola Thorne and Rachel O’Flaherty began to exert an influence. O’Flaherty struck a huge effort for a point into the wind which dipped at the last minute deceiving the Plunketts goalkeeper for a fortuitous goal. The ever industrious Orlaith Durkan struck an impressive point into the wind to open a three point gap.

Plunketts responded with two pointed frees from their intercounty star Laoise Quinn. Harps corner forward Alix Buckley, in a portent of things to come, won possession, was fouled and Thorne converted. Three minutes later Buckley, excellently fed by Tara O’Flaherty, rounded her player and struck a great goal from fifteen metres on the left. A five point interval lead would have given the Harps a sense of comfort but Plunketts stormed back in the last couple of minutes to add a goal and a point leaving just the minimum in it at the break 2-2 to 1-4.

A strong start to the second half by the Harps resulted in points from Durkan and captain Aoife Halpin. The three point margin was wiped out by the afore-mentioned quick free by Carolan.

Having withstood the intense pressure from Plunketts the last ten minutes belonged to the Harps, and in particular to lethal forward Buckley. Following a pointed free from Thorne, Buckley cut through the defence again to claim her second goal on the 53rd minute mark. She followed up with a good point from play and taking a pass from full forward Niamh Murphy she completed her hat trick with a great finish to the top corner.

A happy Harps squad returned with the championship trophy after a hard fought but deserved victory and now look forward to playing in the elite division of the Dublin Camogie championship in 2018.

arps: Ashling Spillane, Ciara Copeland , Roisin Leneghan, Kathy Gilmore , Grace Leach, Jean Murphy, Megan Carroll, Orlaith Durkan(0-2), Aoife Halpin (0-1f), Nicola Thorne(0-2f), Tara O’Flaherty , Alix Buckley (3-1)Niamh Murphy, Robyn Kehoe. Subs: Leona Harford for Rachel O’Flaherty, Emma Parker for Kehoe, Shona McMahon for Copeland. Ona Keegan, Chloe McNicholas, Roisin O’Connor Flanagan, Hannah Coleman, Niamh Kirby.
