News and Club Notes

Finian Murray (RIP)

posted by Skerries Harps

The Executive Committee, on behalf of all club members, were saddened to hear of the passing of our Honorary Vice President Finian Murray yesterday morning.

Finian embodied the spirit of the GAA as a player on our then Senior Team, with Dublin in the NFL and with his native Sligo in the Connaught Championship, as a member of the Club executive, instrumental in the setting up of the Juvenile Section of the club, and as a volunteer in the truest sense, giving of his time to drive Juvenile teams to matches in his Ford Van, and mentoring many a team in his day.

Finian did an immense amount for Skerries Harps, behind the scenes, never needing or wanting any recognition for all he did, and without him & his support over the years, we would not be where we are today. A staunch Harps man, he will be dearly missed by the Club.

Our condolences to Finian's brothers Cathal & Paraic, sisters Rosaleen & Mary & the extended Murray family at this difficult time.

Jane's House Fundraiser

During May 2020 our Senior/Junior/Minor & U16 Ladies Football & Camogie teams ran a marathon (around Skerries) to raise funds for Jane's House , in memory of our much missed club member, Jane Dardis.

Jane's House is part of Nyumbani Children's Orphan Aid , Kenya & was co-founded by Sr Mary Owen's, a Loreto nun who grew up a stone's throw from Skerries Harps.

Nyumbani Village in Keyna has up to 1,000 children and 100 grandparents displaced by the Kenya Aids epidemic who live in small cottage units as families. The Village provides a stable home for the most vulnerable children where they can go to school, excel at sport, participate in music, draw, learn vocational trades and further re-education. Nyumbani Village changes lives for the better.

Over €12,500 was raised by the Ladies teams with all monies going directly to Jane's House. The letter below from Nyumbani is an acknowledgement of the huge meaning this fundraiser has for the charity.

The Dardis Family, David, Bernie & Emma, would like to thank all those who took part in this fundraiser and who so generously donated, for remembering Jane & supporting the fantastic work being done in her memory in Kenya.

Results for the last week

Tuesday

Junior Camogie defeated St Oliver Plunketts ER after extra-extra-time, 2-7 to 2-5, to progress to the Junior 2 Shield Final.

Wednesday

Senior Ladies Footballers hosted Ballinteer St Johns in the Div 2 League Cup, the away side prevailing on a scoreline of 4-11 to 3-7.

Friday

Minor Ladies Footballers lost to a strong St Finians/St Sylvesters amalgamation in the Div 2 Championship.

Saturday & Sunday

The Junior 'B' Hurling Championship Final was the only fixture to proceed as a result of Covid restrictions at the weekend.

Craobh Chiarain opened the scoring with a point inside the first 10 seconds of the game & in a further blow Harps lost wing back Iain Furlong to injury in the immediate aftermath. David Graham equalised inside the first 5 minutes from a '65' & this was quickly followed by a point from midfielder Cian Coleman. The next 4 points were shared between the sides before a goal in the 13th minute followed by a point gave Craobh Chiarain a 3 point cushion. Skerries responded with points from David Graham & Aidan Kehoe to reduce the gap to the minimum before Craobh Chiarain hit their 5th point of the game to lead by 2 points at the water break.

Harps started the 2nd quarter well & hit the first 2 points before Craobh Chiarain responded with a point of their own to regain the lead. Once again the sides shared the next 4 points with David Graham converting his 4th '65' of the game. Two late points from Aidan Kehoe & Jack Fitzpatrick saw Harps lead 0-12 to 1-8 at half time.

As with the 1st half it was Craobh Chiarain who opened the scoring with a point from a '65' before David Graham took his tally to 0-5 from a free. A well worked goal from Matthew Dooley opened up a 4 point lead for Harps early in the 2nd half which was reduced to 3 points by the time the referee blew for the 2nd half water break.

On the resumption of play Craobh Chiarain reduced the deficit to 2 points but Harps reeled off 4 unanswered scores from frees to push the lead out to 6 points inside the final 10 minutes. Craobh Chiarain responded with a point which was cancelled out by another Aidan Kehoe free before Robert Kenny scored Harps 2nd goal with just over 3 minutes remaining. From the puckout Craobh Chiarain went looking for a much needed goal & despite the initial effort being well saved by Mikey Joyce the rebound was finished to the Harps net.

This was to be the final score of the game with the referee blowing the full time whistle shortly to leave Harps as winners on a score line of 2-19 to 2-13. The Cup was presented to Harps captain, Eoin Hickey, by former Dublin GAA Chairman Sean Shanley.

Congratulations to the players & management!

Thanks to Louise Byrne (Byrne Performance) for the live stream & Denis Murphy for providing the commentary.

Results for the last week

Saturday

U14 Camogie & Hurlers lost their respective games against Naomh Olaf while the U16 Hurlers received a walkover from Naomh Olaf. U13 Girls travelled to Ballyboden St Endas & had a good win.

Sunday

U16 Ladies Football had another good win, this time over St Margarets. Both U15 Hurling teams qualified for the Championship knock out stages, 'B' Championship team defeated O'Tooles while the 'D' Championship team lost to Castleknock.

Mixed results for our Minor Footballers with a win over St Patricks (D) & a loss to Templeogue Synge St.

Our Junior Hurlers were in Championship semi-final action against Commercials on Sunday morning. Harps raced into an early 3 point lead inside the first 15 minutes but Commercials responded with the next 3 scores, including a goal, to lead 1-4 to 0-5 after 20 minute. Harps outscored the visitors 0-5 to 0-2 in the final 10 minutes of the opening half to lead 0-10 to 1-5. Midway through the 2nd half Harps had a 4 point advantage but Commercials to there credit managed to level proceedings just after the 20 minute mark. Once again Harps opened up a 4 point gap heading for injury time but the away side hit an unanswered 1-1 to level the game in injury time. The drama wasn't over as Harps were awarded a free well on their own 65m line &  midfielder Cian Coleman struck what looked like the winning point but once again Commercials leveled the game with a free. Well into injury time Harps were presented with another free & David Graham made no mistake in what was to be the final action of the game. Final Score: Harps 0-24 Commercials 2-17

Congrats to the players & management, they will now play Craobh Chiarain in the Final. The game is provisionally fixed for Saturday September 19th at 5pm in O'Toole Park.

U13 & U15 Ladies Footballers lost to St Maurs while the 2nd U13 Ladies Footballers defeated Naomh Barrog. U13 Hurlers lost to Whitehall while the U14 Hurlers played their opening Feile game against Kevins HC & won 4-8 to 0-9. Pictures will be posted on our Flickr account later in the week.

Sunday - U8 Camogie hosted St Maurs & O'Dwyers, U13 Camogie had a good win over Ballyboden St Endas.  Mixed results for our U15 Hurlers with a win over Whitehall Colmcille & a defeat to Castleknock. Minor Footballers made to trip to Dalkey but it was Cuala who came out on top, 3-12 to 2-11. The 2nd Minor team received a walkover from St Judes. U16 Ladies Footballers got back to winning ways defeating St Margarets.

Our Junior Hurlers made the trip to Islandbridge for the Championship quarter final against Civil Service on Sunday morning, the hosts had defeated Harps in the group stages by 5 points. Civil Service started well firing over the opening two points & the opening exchanges were frenetic as the referee let the game flow.  Skerries slowly got to the pace of the game with the midfield pairing of Eoghan McGinley & Cian Coleman & the half foward line of Jack Fitzpatrick, Aidan Kehoe & Jack Drumm now getting on top. A well taken goal from Shane Rice, the 1st of his 3 goals, saw Harps lead 1-4 to 0-3 in the early stages. Midway through the half the visitors lead 2-6 to 0-7 & at half time they had extended the lead to 6 points, 2-12 to 0-12, with the quick delivery of ball into the full forward line of Robert Kenny, Shane Rice & Matthew Dooley paying divdends.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 2nd half but the full back line of Adam El Shamy, Daniel Graham & Eoin Hickey assisted by half time substitute Kian Coleman kept the hosts at bay. David Graham came into the half forward line early in the 2nd half & immediately fielded a puck out from Mikey Joyce to hit the first of his 5 points. Harps took over in the 3rd quarter outscoring Civil Service 1-6 0-2 with Shane Rice netting his 3rd goal of the game. The outstanding display of the day came from the impressive half back line of Iain Furlong, Finn Chatten & Donal Cotter who stifled any Civil Service attacks & launched most of Skerries attacks with quick ball into the forward line. Additonal changes saw Donagh McGinley, Colin McMahon & Sean Fearon come on in the 2nd half to add to Harps dominance, while the unused subs on the day (Conor Waddilove, David Boyd & Cian Mullarkey) ensure that the pressure is put on each of the panel to perform.  The final quarter saw Skerries hit 0-7 to the hosts 1-1 to run out deserving winners on a scoreline of 3-25 to 1-15. Scorers: S Rice 3-2, E McGinley 0-5, D Graham 0-5, M Dooley 0-4, J Fitzpatrick 0-3, A Kehoe 0-3, R Kenny 0-1, J Drumm 0-1, C McMahon 0-1.

Congrats to the players & management, they will now play Commericals at home in the semi final on September 6th.

Our Senior 2 Camogie team hosted Castleknock in the 3rd & final group stage game on Sunday lunchtime. Harps had won their opening two games & while the visitors had one win & one defeat in their games & needed a victory by 4 points to overtake the hosts & deny them a semi final spot so it was setup to be an enthralling encounter & that's exactly what unfolded on front of no spectators bar a small crowd watching from the Dublin Road due to Covid 19 restrictions. Castleknock opened the scoring with a point from play which was cancelled out by a Harps free. Castleknock went in front again with a point from their full forward before two quick fire goals from Nicola Thorne & a point from Orlaith Durkan opened up an early 6 point lead for Harps. The visitors fought back with two unanswered point to reduce the deficit to 4 points midway through the 1st half & followed up with a 3rd unanswered point following the 1st half water break. Another two pointed free's saw the Harps push their lead back to 5 before another 3 unanswered points from the visitors reduced the gap again before Harps hit the final score of the first half to lead 2-5 to 0-8.

Castleknock had the aid of the wind in the 2nd half but it was the Harps who opened the scoring with a point from a free, followed by a point from both sides. The visitors then reduced the gap to a single point with 3 consecutive points from play approaching the midway point of the half & followed up with another 2 points to take the lead for the 1st time since the early stages of the 1st half half. Two pointed frees put the Harps back up by 1 with just over 10 minutes remaining & the next two scores were shared but then Castleknock hit 1-2 without reply to open up the 4 margin they required to reach the semi finals. Harps fought back immediately with their 3rd goal to reduce the deficit before a pointed free extended Castleknock's lead to 2 in injury time. From the puck out Harps got the ball into their forward line where the ball eventually made it's way to Nicola Thorne & there was only going to be one outcome....a 4th Harps & Thorne goal!  Castleknock to their credit kept going & got the final score of the game to level proceedings, 4-10 to 1-19. Scores: N Thorne 4-9 (0-7f), O Durkan 0-1

Congrats to the players & management, best of luck in the semi final against Cuala on Sunday 30th @ 1.30pm.

Covid-19 update

In light of the updated Public Health Guidelines issued last week, the club has been awaiting and reviewing all GAA communications to allow us to issue as clear a set of protocols as possible as we continue to manage our Return to Play across Skerries Harps GAA & Camogie Club whilst adhering to the guidelines and focusing as always on the health & welfare of our players, mentors, coaches & supporters.

As per the latest guidance, all games must now be played without spectators "Behind Closed Doors". For all games,  this means that a maximum  of 40 personnel per team are permitted to attend within the pitch area - this 40 max must be players, mentors/coaches/medical or ancillary members of the coaching group.

Where Juveniles (U18s) are participating in a game , 1 parent / guardian per juvenile is permitted to attend the sporting event in a "supervisory" / "safeguarding" capacity.  These parents/guardians are not classified as spectators at this moment in time, in line with the guidance received this week.

The GAA recommendation as issued last Wednesday states that while further clarification is pending, the suggestion is that one parent/guardian may attend a game where they consider it necessary for the welfare of their own child.

All Social Distancing  & public health guidelines should be adhered to at all times.

Match officials i.e. referee/umpires/linespersons are permitted in addition to the max of 40 per team, as are media personnel and club covid supervisor/stewards.

In relation to training - teams can continue to train, however must ensure that pods of 15 are maintained (for Juveniles u8-u16 this is 13 players, 2 mentors, for Adults 14 players, 1 mentor).

As has already been implemented, sanitising of all equipment must continue, records of those in attendance must be maintained,  and all players and mentors must complete the RETURN TO PLAY attestation prior to participation in any GAA session or match and it is the responsibility of each Team COVID Supervisor to ensure adherence to this mandatory requirement.

Skerries Harps GAA & Camogie Club is committed to ensuring, in as far as is possible for a voluntary organisation, adherence to the guidance and protocols in place and would ask our members, players, coaches and supporters to work with us to ensure that this can continue as it has done since the Return to Play commenced in June.

Fun Skills Sessions / Academy

Well done to all the players who joined us over the last 2 weeks for the Fun Skills Sessions in Skerries Harps.

These were arranged as alternatives to camps this summer. These sessions would not have been possible to run without the fantastic coaches who volunteered their time over the 16 time slots and were so enthusiastic with the children over the various weather conditions and helped them with their skills.

They are a huge asset to the club and we want to thank them all. Coaches were

Aimee, Alana, Caoimhe, Dan, Ellen, Hannah, James, Kate, Keela, Lauren, Mia, Molly, Naoise, Orla, Rachel, Robyn, Sarah F, Seán G, Seán F.  Thanks to both Paul Walsh and Joanne Kenny for their assistance throughout the sessions with all the Covid requirements and return to play protocols.

A huge shout out to our GPO Louise Byrne for putting these sessions together and ensuring all ran according to protocols- as always going above and beyond to ensure our young members are so well looked after.

We are planning a free fun session for the academy age group....stay tuned for more details for this Free Fun Session & we hope to return for our academy term on September 12th.
